After a break from this newsletter last week, I am back at my laptop, lining up writing commissions for this autumn and winter. That September feeling.
All summer we have been hearing on repeat: war and inflation, mass tourism, climate change. Yet this week off, travelling southern Germany and Austria by train, has left me feeling more optimistic — or at least refreshed.
Maybe it was the walks in the forest, or conversations with strangers on the train. Or simply the rose-tinted glasses we wear on holiday.
From Munich, I did all my travel on the Deutschland-Ticket, which allows unlimited journeys on regional and local transport in Germany (this week, Macron said that he is in favour of introducing a similar ticket in France).
